Keyway Note: The cylinder is ''zero bitted'', which means it has no pins inside. The keys furnished are key blanks. We furnish cylinders this way because most customers have a Master Key system.
The exception is a cylinder ordered 1-1/8'' length in the L4 (standard) keyway. These cylinders come keyed random with 2 cut keys.

Mortise cylinders are used with mortise locks plus a number of other hardware products.
These days mortise cylinders have a standardized diameter and standardized threading.
This means you can swap one brand cylinder with another brand.
Your main concern when swapping cylinders is to ensure you have the proper cam type.
Different hardware models take different type cams.
Example:
You have a Corbin Russwin mortise lock and you'd like to use a Sargent cylinder with the lock.
When you buy the Sargent mortise cylinder make sure the cam type matches as closely as possible to the cam used with Corbin Russwin cylinders.
In this case, it is Corbin Russwin's cam called ''A1''. Sargent makes a similar cam.

Mortise cylinders are measured from the back of the lip to the outside edge of the cam.
|
Cylinders are stocked in 3 finishes only:
605 Polished Brass
606 Satin Brass
626 Satin Chrome
|
Cams attach to the back of the cylinder.
Cam style A01 is used most often and therefore is considered the Standard Cam. If you order a cylinder and do not specify a cam, it will come with an A01 cam.
Cam style A02 is the next most popular as it is used with Exit Device Trim, Alarm Kits and the Classroom Function Mortise lock.
The other styles of cams are rarely ordered.

Some of the keyways we stock are listed on the order form, but not all. You'll need to call to order a keyway if you don't see it listed as an ordering option above.
Keyways are very difficult to determine by looking at a picture.
Look on your key to see if the keyway may be stamped on it.
Even better, find some old paperwork that indicated the keyway you require.
It may be an old box of keyblanks that were ordered or even an order for some locks.
You can't guess at keyway so get some verification of your exact number before ordering.
